This interesting diagram of a stethoscope, from the Patent Office records of 1929, shows that this everyday medical tool has changed little in almost a century. We can see from various figures and cross sections that the stethoscope is carefully and intelligently designed, not merely a pair of tubes. Like so many day-to-day objects, this item is rarely appreciated fully for the service it renders. Perhaps this piece would change that.
