This Patent Office diagram of a golf ball is quite stunning in its detail and complexity. Few outside the sport would credit the humble golf ball, now a mass produced and easily discarded thing, with such a level of scientific design. Patented in 1905, over a century ago, F.H. Richards’ design shows the dimples on the ball which make it fly correctly and mine-like structure at the core, which lend it strength without adding too much weight. Aficionados will enjoy this new appreciation of the ball.
